Vampire Themed Genre Television Shows

Since Spoiler TV started this poll about everyone favorite vampire shows I thought that blog about the various television shows and the vampire genre would be welcomed.

Here is the link to Spoiler TV's Poll USD Pull Favorite Three Vampire Shows

First let me start out by saying in the entertainment media today we have all kinds of books, novels movies, television shows about vampires, and now it seems the advertisers of some tv commercials are even getting in on the vampire craze

But what I would like to talk about is the various tv shows of the vampire genre maybe even give a little history about some of the various shows listed in their poll.

There have been lots of Sci-Fi- Paranormal themed television shows over the years such as Supernatural, Grimm, Charmed, American Gothic, Wolf Lake, The Walkilng Dead, Highlander, The Gates, etc  Some of them only lasting one season and there have been others that have gone on to have at least 8 seasons.  But it is the vampire genre shows that many people seem to love the most.

But right now it's the vampire genre has never been hotter.  As I said earlier there are dozens and dozens of novels, movies out there but it's just been in the last thirty to thirty-five years alone there has also many television shows at least a dozen if not more all together that are vampire themed genre shows.  Starting in the sixties with the gothic vampire-themed soap called Dark Shadows starring Jonathon Frid as Barnabas Collins, which today still has a huge fanbase.

Then in 1979 NBC gave sci-fi fans a show entitled Cliffhangers and inside that show was a 20 minute serial called The Curse of Dracula starring Micheal Nouri as Dracula it was this short lived series that really sparked my interest in the genre as a child.

Then in the late 80's early 90's CBS first tried their hand with vampires starting with a movie from Jim Parriot called Nick Knight starring Rick Springfield which later was developed into a tv series called Forever Knight starring Geriant Wyn Davies, Catherine Disher, Nigel Bennett, Deborah Duchene, John Kapelos, Gary Farmer, Lisa Ryder, Ben Bass, Kristen Lehman.   Forever Knight last only one season on CBS as part of their late night line up called Crime Time after Prime Time.  CBS cancelled it after one season but it was brought back for a second season in syndication because of the fan campaign to save it.  Then it was brought back for a third season because once again the fans campaigned to save it which the did it was given a new home on the cable network USA which is now owned by NBC-Universal and it also remained in syndication.   Sadly it never got a a fourth season but that show garnered a huge loyal fanbase that is still around today.  Forever Knight was the first to have a email discussion list about the show which is still in operation today, and it also was given three books based on the series and it's characters, as well as two soundtracks which contains the music that was used from all three seasons from the various episodes including the music that was used in the vampire bar on the show called The Raven.  The fans even continued to campaign to Sony so that the series would be put on on DVD which it was.

I've watched just about every vampire show there is and I've loved them all, but out of them all Moonlight starring Alex O'Loughlin, Sophia Myles and Jason Dohring is my all time favorite because like Forever Knight it was solely about vampires. Now Moonlight was CBS' second attempt at television show with vampires.   Moonlight only lasted one season on CBS 2007/2008 because the of the writers strike that season it was only given 16 episodes but even five years later it still remains a favorite among fans.   Co-Creators & Co-Excutive Producers Trevor Munson & Ron Koslow gave us a modern day twist to the vampire myth as well the unique love story between a vampire & a human (Mick St. John & Beth Turner)

Moonlight was based on Co-Creator & Co-Executive Producer Trevor Munson's Novel Angel Of Vengeance about a vampire named Mick Angel.

Like Forever Knight Moonlight garnered a loyal fanbase that fought for a second season with letters and email and charity blood drives but a second season was not given and many fans from the show still hold out hope for more someday.

I also enjoy The CW's The Vampire Diaries starring Nina Dobrev,
Ian Somehalder, Paul Wesley which is based on the series of books of the same name.

The Vampire Diaries are going into it's fifth season with a spin off debuting this fall on the CW
called The Originals starring Joseph Morgan as Klaus.

I also enjoy  HBO's True Blood starring Stephen Moyer & his wife Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgard which is currently in it's sixth season and has already been renewed for a seventh season.

I have to say I'm looking forward to the two newest vampire shows coming this fall to both the CW & NBC networks The Originals on The CW.

Then there is NBC's Dracula also coming this fall now this particular version has got me curious since it supposedly takes place in the 19th century.  Dracula stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Other past vampire shows that I have enjoyed includes

Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer & it's spinoff, Angel The Series which starred Sarah Michelle Geller and David Boreanaz.

Fox's  Kindred The Embraced, starring Marc Frankel & C. Thomas Howell. Kindred The Embraced was based on the White-Wolf Role Playing Game Vampire: The Masquarade.

Lifetime's Blood Ties starring Kyle Schmid as Henry Fitzroy and Christina Cox as Vicki Nelson.  Blood Ties was based on Tonya Huff's Blood Lies Books.

BBC's hit Being Human  and of course SyFy's verison of Being Human.

The is another gothic vampire soap that is also worth mentioning I'm not talking about the gothic soap Dark Shadows and it's remake which I mentioned at the beginning of this blog but,  I'm talking about ABC's gothic soap Port Charles which was a spin off of the ABC Iconic Soap General Hospital.

There is also one more worth mentioning and that is ABC's The Gates which also only lasted one season.

Alex's Latest Interview - “One Of The Errors Of My Career Was Doing A Vampire Show (‘Moonlight’)." But Was It Really A Career Error Alex ?

“One of the errors of my career was doing a vampire show (‘Moonlight’). The fans that I got from that show are very committed. They will never ever see me as anything other than Mick St. John."

Okay so I'm sure by now everyone has seen & read the latest Alex O'Loughlin Interview from the Philippine Daily Inquirer if not here is the link Alex's Latest Interview From The Philippine Daily Inquirer

I know what I am about to say is not going to be very popular with the Alex Fans & the Hawaii Five-0 Fans and for that I am sorry.  I'm a Moonlight Fan, I'm a Alex O'Loughlin Fan and I am a Hawaii Five-0 Fan.   I have never seen it as a problem of being a fan of the actor himself and a fan of both highly popular shows.

Let me start out by saying first and foremost that I am in no way condoning Alex’s comments in this article when it comes to Moonlight & the fans, in fact I am disagreeing with him on what he had to say about Moonlight & the fans.

Speaking as a Moonlight Fan I do know that there are some Moonlight Fans & some Alex Fans that are bit crazy and go to far but let’s be real here It’s not fair for Alex to group all the fans of Moonlight together like we all won’t let him move on and that we only see him as Mick St. John because I know speaking strictly for just myself that is not the case.

Alex has contradicted himself before in other interviews where Moonlight is concerned time and time again for the last 4 years since Moonlight was unjustly canceled that is nothing new for Moonlight Fans; But strictly speaking as both a Moonlight fan and as an Alex fan I am very disappointed in him with this comment. Whether Alex said it like he meant it or whether or not it was taken out of context and he said it jokingly. It doesn’t matter now really because what’s said is said and the damage has already been done and there is no way that Alex can take it back even if he wanted to.

I’m actually studying to be a filmmaker with the ultimate goal of being a producer & director for feature film & television series; The one thing I am learning is that you never ever make public comments like this.

It’s because comments of this sort can alienate your fans and the people who made you a star and in this case that would be the show’s creators along with the cast & crew Alex worked with. It was Trevor Munson & Ron Koslow who first cast Alex in the role of Mick St. John because they saw something in him that worked.  They ended up recasting everyone except Alex after they shot the first pilot and that is how we ended up with the great cast that we got when Moonlight first premiered on CBS. If it had been not been for both Trevor & Ron casting him as the lead character Mick St. John in Moonlight, If it had not been for Moonlight & the some 8 million fans that he garnered during that 2007-2008 season, Alex would have never gotten the breaks that he has gotten.   CBS would not have given Alex that talent hold contract, The Criminal Minds episode, The Back Up Plan, Three Rivers &  Now Hawaii Five-0.

It was because of having starred as Mick St. John in Moonlight and along with the fans that Alex was put in the position to even be considered for the role of Steve McGarrett and this is how he thanks the fans & the people who made him a star by making an off the cuff comment like this and alienating and entire fan base of some 8 Million plus people who were more or less his first real fans here in the US and who for the most part have followed him from Moonlight to Hawaii Five-0.

Based on what I have seen and heard since yesterday when the interview first came out and talking to other fans, I have to say the majority of fans are shocked, hurt, saddened and down right angry over his comments about Moonlight & the fans and that even if Alex addresses this in the future I doubt it will do any good because the damage has already been done.

I personally doubt very seriously that we will ever get any type of explanation or apology from Alex these days.

IMO since Hawaii Five-0 got that second season from CBS Alex has changed dramatically he is not the same person who for four years when asked always proclaimed to love the vampire genre & whose face lit up with a sparkle in his eyes and beautiful smile every time Moonlight or it's fans was mentioned to him in interviews. It's really sad.

Alex has to know that you don’t alienate the people who made you because someday you might just need them again.

I am not trying to piss anyone off here. I’m stating my opinion on this.

Don’t throw to many tomatoes at me

Moonlight Fans Trevor Munson's Book That Inspired The Hit TV Show MOONLIGHT- Angel Of Vengeance Release Date Draws Closer & Closer Feb 1st 2011

Well here we go Moonlight Fans Trevor Munson's book Angel Of Vengeance will be released on Feb 1, 2011.  Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever for this book to finally come out, ever since Trevor posted several chapters online which many of us have read anxiously, we have been awaiting this book and now the wait is almost over.

Those that have read those early chapters online can tell you that the Mick Angel in the book is very different & a little bit darker then the Mick St. John who we met in Moonlight.  Which gives us an idea of the changes that took place to make Angel Of Vegeance into what we saw on TV back in 2007-2008 as Moonlight.

I have no doubt that when you read Angel Of Vengeance you be enthralled from the very beginning.  I have complete faith Moonlight Fans will make Trevor's book a bestseller. You know folks it is important to remember that the sale of the book could not only lead to more Mick Angel or even Moonlight novels, but  it could also show The Powers That Be what MOONLIGHT FANS already know that a MOONLIGHT MOVIE would be a huge success.  So come on fans lets spread the word.

Trevor Munson along side VRO hosts Amy McCracken & Lisa Stevens discusses with Moonlight Fans how Angel Of Vegeance went from Novel to TV in what we know as MOONLIGHT.  During a live interview with fans on The VRO's Moonlight Radio heard on Blog Talk Radio back in June 2010 in South Carolina

Fandom Bashing & Bullying - The Viscious Cycle Of Unacceptable Fan Behavior Towards Each Other Needs To Stop

Okay here is my opinion on this whole matter.

I want to state for the record that I am first and foremost a Moonlight Fan, however I am also a fan of all the actors from Moonlight and not just one particular actor in general, I think I can safely say that we can all be fans of Alex O'Loughlin, Moonlight and Hawaii Five-0 and still have different opinions it does not have to be one way or the other.

A friend of mine recently wrote about Stopping Bashers and I applaud her for it. At one time not so long ago back in 2007-2008 the fans of the unjustly canceled TV Show Moonlight were once a very strong and very united fanbase sadly these days that isn't case. It's sad really because once upon a time we were all friends we all got along despite different opinions, different views and outlooks there was no personal attacks on each other, no threatening each other or bullying each other of any kind people seemed to respect one another, then we had one bad apple that seemingly ruined the fun for everyone and yes there was alot of hurt involved for all of us because of what this one person did.

Since that time many fans have split into factions that is very evident these days on alot of Moonlight Message Boards and battle lines have seemingly been drawn. There are those who are strictly fans of everything Moonlight(which includes ALL of the actors) and then there are those that are just fans of Alex O'Loughlin that is a fact.

There are some fans from another board that feel that it's their right to come to the Moonlight boards and police the Moonlight Fans that have a different opinions then themselves by launching unprovoked personal attacks, intimidation, threats towards fans that disagree with them which in my estimation is nothing more then bashing and bullying tactics. It's because of this type of behavior that some of the fans that were on some of the Moonlight Message Boards either don't post anymore or don't come to boards at all anymore because of fear of being attached by certain group of fans that attack like a pack of hungry lions circling their prey. This type of behavior by fans is totally unacceptable. It does not help Alex O'Loughlin, Moonlight or Alex's new show Hawaii Five-0 when fans attack one another.

Here is an example of the battle lines between the fans of Moonlight and the Alex Fans last year over at the CBS Three Rivers Forum there was poll asking which show starring Alex O'Loughlin was better Three Rivers or Moonlight. It got pretty ugly over there between the fans many of those posts were just flat out rude and nasty by a group of certain fans towards other fans. I personally feel that they were made just to incite and inflame the already angry tensions that seems to be going on now more the ever between the fans and the many factions that were there to begin with. I am already seeing the same thing happening again now with the Alex Fans and those that support Hawaii Five-0 vs. those fans that still support Moonlight nine months later. So I ask everyone can't we all just get along please.

I have firm belief that you should treat people the way you would want to be treated yourself everyone wants to be treated fairly and with respect, when fans pull this type of vindictive & disrespectful behavior towards each other no matter what side of the fence you are on it reflects badly on the reputations of the shows and the actors involved as well the fans as a whole. I would like to think that nobody would want that for the actors, the shows or themselves.

Another Open Letter To The CBS Executives - Moonlight & Hawaii Five-0 Why Not Give Fans Both To Appease Everyone ?

CBS was indeed the first network to have a show strictly about vampires & humans and was also the first to have a real love story between a vampire and a human.  That show was Moonlight.    It was CBS that started the latest vampire craze all over again a craze that is still going strong with the success of HBO's True Blood, CW's The Vampire Diaries which like Moonlight  2 years ago won The People's Choice Award for Best New Drama.  If you add in the success of the vampire films that have come out since Moonlight's cancellation it's clear to see that the vampire craze has never been more hotter, stronger then it now and is likely not going to end anytime soon.  I would like to remind you that it was also CBS who very short-sightedly canceled Moonlight just after 16 episodes when this latest vampire craze was just getting ready to really take off at full force.

As you know Moonlight won The People's Choice Award in 2007 for The Best New Drama.  Since it's cancellation fans wrote to Warner Brothers tirelessly and it was released on DVD with just the episodes no extras that normally come with any DVD.  Back in 2009 Moonlight The Complete Series was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Series On DVD.   Moonlight won that award.

Moonlight had everything that makes a show work.  An entire cast who had amazing chemistry together, It had wonderful & gifted writers, beautiful sets, and outstanding music.

For many fans Moonlight was not just about lead actor Alex O'Loughlin bare-chested on a beach like in episode 13 Fated To Pretend.  It wasn't just about any one actor or any one thing in particular it was all about the whole show not only Alex O'Loughlin but also Sophia Myles, Jason Dohring, and the rest of the supporting cast,  It was the stories each and every week that brought fans back even after the writers strike.   It was the entire package of the show that we loved.  Even now two years later going on three the fans are still here wanting more they haven't gone away, that should at least say something.  Moonlight is still gaining new fans all time because of the repeats that are being shown on the SyFy Channel & ChillerTV and now on the CW where it is being paired with repeats of the Vampire Diaries  they all say that they want to see more Moonlight many of these new Moonlight fans can’t understand how they could have missed it when first aired on CBS.

To be perfectly honest with you I would much rather see Alex O'Loughlin back as Mick St. John on Moonlight then see him in a remake of Hawaii-Five-0 but after seeing the promo for this updated version and Alex’s take on McGarrett it does have me curious enough that I will be watching this fall.

Remakes of classic tv shows as rule never do well and I would hate to see another project  of Alex’s fail like the medical drama Three Rivers did.  I would really like to see Hawaii Five-0 be successful for Alex’s sake.  It’s my hope that if Hawaii Five-0 is successful that you would allow Alex O’Loughlin do Moonlight in his down time from Hawaii Five-0  it would be great to see him back in the role that made him a star and gave him such huge overnight success not only here in the USA but internationally.

I know many Moonlight fans old and new would be happy if you could bring Moonlight back as a  movie or a series of movies, a mini-series or even a summer series with 12 or 13 episodes.

Moonlight already has a built in fanbase that is just going to keep getting bigger because of the repeats that are being shown.  I urge you to bring back Moonlight with it's entire cast Alex O'Loughlin, Sophia Myles, Jason Dohring and the rest of the supporting cast intact, I would also like to request that the original creators Trevor Munson & Ron Koslow be involved because  they were the ones with their team of writers that gave fans the characters and episodes that we've come to know and love so much.

Thanks for your time and consideration

An Open Letter To The CBS Executives

Moonlight Fandom - "Show-Centric" Fans VS "Actor Centric" Fans, Etc

I want to state for the record that I am first and foremost a Moonlight Fan, however I am also a fan of all the actors from Moonlight and not just one particular actor in general.

At one time not so long ago the fans of the unjustly canceled TV Show Moonlight were once a very strong and very united fanbase sadly these days that isn't case. In closing let me say that for many of the Moonlight Fans like me that we loved Moonlight because it was a good show it had a great cast that had amazing chemistry with each other, The writing was good, the dialogue was good, The music was amazing and the sets were awesome. Everything about Moonlight just worked.
